Have you noticed a change in the pet supply aisle of your local department store? The utilitarian dishes and leashes, and crates and brushes are still there—right next to the “canine couture!” I found day wear for tiny toy breeds and leathers (faux, of course) for Rottweilers and their like.

Rows of boots and hats, in various sizes, shapes and colors flanked the sweaters and T-shirts—each bearing clever expressions to convey a dog’s inner thoughts; such as “Where’s the beef?” and “I’d rather be chasing sheep!”

Whether your favorite dog weighs 3 pounds or a hundred pounds more—you can outfit and accessorize to your heart’s content! Dog breeds that have worked the fields for hundreds of years can be seen parading the city streets in ski jackets and matching booties. What does this say about dog owners? Have we turned functioning canine companions into spoiled, silly specimens?

Or…are people displaying shear joy and a sense of humor—by dressing their pets to attend weddings, soccer games, beach parties, and holiday events? I know of no better conversation piece than a dog dressed to the nines. The creativity brings a smile to the face, and encourages even strangers to comment. Fashionable dogs can be seen visiting hospitals and nursing homes, and they can lift the spirits of the most down-trodden soul.

Of course, I love a dog that is “comfortable in its own skin”…but I know that people love their dogs so much that the items they choose reflect a commitment to their pets that goes far beyond the basics. Dogs wearing Gucci most certainly enjoy high quality pet foods, regular veterinary care and lots of human attention—it’s all good…
