The labeling of dogs as fashion accessories has helped boost the number of stray dogs in the U.K., according to a dog welfare charity. “We are asking the public to take action and to consider fully the responsibility of owning a dog,” said Clarissa Baldwin, chief executive of Dogs Trust--which says it is the U.K.’s largest dog welfare charity. “…they are not a fad or a fashion statement to be disposed of when the novelty wears off.”
A report conducted by GfK NOP on behalf of Dogs Trust showed that 105,068 stray dogs were picked up in the UK last year, and 7,892 were put to sleep, a small increase on the previous year’s findings. Although there had been a dramatic reduction in the country's number stray dogs in the last ten years, says the group, progress seems to have peaked as the stray population has remained at a consistent level for the last four years. |
